Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal: Duel Carnival gets a debut trailer launched to give you a heads up for this new Nintendo 3DS title on the way

A short while back, I posted about Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal: Duel Carnival heading your way soon to the Nintendo 3DS. It's about time too, the 3DS could use another Yu-Gi-Oh! game for the road. Since it's called Zexal, that's exactly where it will be centered, on the 4th installment in the series that is. This one will feature well over 5,000 cards for you to use, and over 40 different characters for you to play and duel with. This is the first of its kind to offer a real close simulation for the traditional trading card game itself. Monsters from the Zexal series included of course.

The only problem so far is the fact that Yu-Gi-Oh! games have a tendency to not make it to other parts of the world, and there is no word as of yet if even this one will make it outside the confines of Japan. It's a bit sad, as one can never get enough Yu-Gi-Oh! dueling action to fill your day up. Yuma and Astral would agree I think. The trailer below shows what's in store for Japanese gamers soon should they decide to jump on board with this hot title.

Kojima statements on Twitter about how troublesome "PoliceNauts" was when it launched back in the mid 90s due to lack of sales

Kojima loves to talk on Twitter, and of course, everyone listens. You never know what new things you can learn when your following certain people. Like PoliceNauts. Ever heard of that one? If you haven't it's no surprise, since the project for it started years before it actually was released, and when released it was not well received. Too bad considering it's a pretty darn good title. The project was started in 1991, with screen writing, concept art, etc., but the entire game was not finished until a few years later. Upon its release in 1994 on the NEC PC-9821 in Japan, Kojima visited a store and noticed that there were no sales taking place for Policenauts. A disappointing prospect indeed, considering the lack of advertising for it.

Later the title ended up on the Playstation, Saturn, and 3DO, giving a greater audience a chance to enjoy such a fine game. On July 29, just a couple of days ago, Kojima made these statements about the trouble with Policenauts.

"MG1(87)"-"SNATCHER(88)"-"MG2(90)"-"SNATCHER CD(92)"-"POLICENAUTS(94〜96)". Was tough time for "POLICENAUTS" during company restructuring.

As matter fact, by '91, all the concept, screen writing and script (lite ver) of "POLICANAUTS" were already completed.

1994.7.29, "POLICENAUTS"PC9821 ver was released w/o anyone's attention.I went to store in Sannomiya on the launch day but no one was buying.

You can check out a couple of photos below and a video of Policenauts, and it just might make you want to dig further into a classic that time seem to have forgotten, if it ever noticed it in the first place. By the way, notice the Metal Gear and Solid Snake reference in the bottom picture. Product placement?

PES 2014 is set to launch on the same day as FIFA, where they will both go head to head for the number one position, seriously enough this time, and for the first time in years. PES has struggled to maintain itself as a rival against FIFA, but always taking the silver medal in the process. Now that it's being backed up by the Fox Engine, some speculate that might change this year. You can expect the release of it on September 24, as recently confirmed by Konami. Xbox 360, PS3, and PSP will see their version, but not next generation consoles or 3DS, PSVita, nor Wii-U. The latest trailer with Kei Masuda below explains some of the new concept systems being implemented this time around.

Konami will deliver SYNKROS, a casino interface management system being used in partnership with Northwind for casino hotels

There isn't a lot of folks out there that realize that Konami also has a hand in the casino market. One thing they are well known for in that particular business is their SYNKROS casino management system. Northwind is aware of it, and wants to partner with Konami in making use of their system for casino based hotels. That's some pretty high dollar stuff right there. According to Tom Soukup, who is Vice President of Konami's R&D division, he stated in an interview on the matter....

“Northwind and Konami worked closely to create an interface that shares player rewards point information with the Maestro PMS. The integration provides enhanced guest service at casino resorts through faster point redemption. At casino resorts managed by SYNKROS, guests with a loyalty program membership may be instantly recognized during check-in at any resort with the Maestro PMS. This creates total-property guest recognition since guests’ point totals are available for verification or redemption at the front desk and other outlets.”

Did you know that Konami actually started out as a jukebox rental company? Who would've though of that, and yet it's true. For some quick samples of how their casino setup looks, check out some photos and a video below of their how cool their machines look. You just might find yourself one day in front of one if your feeling a bit lucky.

The Ultimate PC edition of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow demo will sink its fangs into Steam tomorrow for you to try before you buy

Tomorrow is demo day. Yes demo day for the Ultimate edition of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, the PC version, as it makes its way onto Steam for you to try before you buy. This was confirmed by a Konami representative recently, so it's a done deal if you want to download it when it debuts the 31st. It's called the "Ultimate" edition, simply because it contains the Reverie and Resurrection add on chapters, as well as all of the available downloadable content released for it up to this point. It seems Lords of Shadow is still making waves even though it's been out for about three years now. Not bad for a 3D Castlevania game.

So what about the official release dates for the retail version? You can look forward to that on August 27th as it makes its way fully onto Steam. Europe will see a store bought boxed version of it on August 30th. You now have about a month to try it out, especially for those of you who have a PC, but no gaming consoles like the PS3 to use. That would make this the first time you've witnessed the game in action. Believe me, after playing it for a while, you'll likely want the full retail version when it launches at the end of next month. When tomorrow comes, I'll post the download link here for it as soon as I catch knowledge of it. Now watch some splendid footage below, with the wonderful Super Castlevania IV soundtrack attached to it.

The PES 2014 versus FIFA 2014 battle will take place on the same release date, but which one will come out ahead this year as a result?

Ever since the Fox Engine was announced that it will be backing PES 2014 this time around, fans of the series were wondering if this might actually mean that FIFA's only true rival will outmatch it this year. Last years release of Pro Evolution Soccer 2013 saw that the series was at a final crossroad, meaning, it had been redone and redone over and over to the point to where it couldn't improve anymore.

Don't get me wrong, PES 2013 saw some splendid improvements, but once again came up second in command to EA's long time running FIFA rival. The new question this year is, now that the famous Fox Engine has taken over the series, could this mean that FIFA will finally be outdone. At least for once that is.

In order to prove that theory, Konami has decided to go all out this time around and release the new ProEvolution Soccer 2014 on the same exact date as FIFA 2014. September 24th is the official launch day for both titles and shortly after you will see who the real victor in this year's soccer challenge will be. Both games have always had certain elements the other lacked. The number of licensed teams being one of them.

You've always had fans of both arguing across the table at which one is better and for what reason. This year it seems some new arguments will be brought to light, and it'll be interesting to see how it turns out once again. Check out a quick comparison video a fan made below and you can make your own decision.

Dave Cox and Enric Alvarez talk about the challenge that was outlined for them in taking the Castlevania game series into a new direction

It seems that Castlevania has been such a long running series, that a lot of fans have probably thought at one time or another that it's run out of ideas. When Order of Ecclesia came out, after finishing it myself, I wondered if there would ever be another title like it. I enjoyed it, but at the same time I also saw the gaming industry doing everything it could to push a lot of past titles into a new 3D realm.

Sure Castlevania faired pretty well with Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness, but what after that? That's where Konami decided to turn the steering wheel over to MercurySteam, letting them take the series into a new direction, and praying that the fans were accepting enough to give it a shot.

Recently in an interview with Dave Cox and director Enric Alvarez were asked about the challenges that they were faced in taking Castlevania in the direction they felt it should go. Here are a few of the statements they had to say on the issue.

ALVAREZ: "At the end of the day, we (at MercurySteam) are a Western developer. If we did the same type of game (as the classic Nintendo games) it'd be a failure. This is our philosophy, the way we see things. After all, the vampire mythology we are depicting in this game belongs to the European culture. We handle this a different way than a Japanese developer. It's not better or worse. It's just different."

Dave Cox also weighed in by adding....

COX: "We always knew it would be a difficult task to bring everyone along with us. Once we got our heads around that, we were able to do what we wanted. I think that gave us a lot of confidence to develop Lords of Shadow 2 again in our own way. We almost felt vindicated in a way. We accept that some people aren't going to like what we're doing. And there's nothing you can do about that."

    Also adding....

"We felt more confident in the second one that we could do more risky things. We really love to surprise people. It would have been very easy for us to knock out a sequel (in 2012) after one year. But we just didn't want to do that."

What was also helpful was the fact they received some help and advice from none other than Hideo Kojima himself, whose role was simply to advise, and to not interfere. He knew it was a bit of a risk. It always is when you change the direction of a project to something that's never been done before. But after seeing the success of the first Lords of Shadow game, if was pretty much on automatic pilot with the next Lords of Shadow title.

LOS2 will however be the last Castlevania game ever created by MercurySteam again. This marks the end of the series in terms of what they will produce. Cox in a few statements at the GamesCom round table had this to say about the future of the series.

"I think if you've got something to say, you should just say it, and when you're done, just shut up, and we've got something to say. Once it's out there, think it's time for somebody else, somebody younger, a younger producer to come in and take up the mantle and do what they think would be right for Castlevania and for us to move on to something else."

Something else indeed, let me just add that whoever that somebody else is, I hope they can also embrace Castlevania the way the rest of us have over the last 26 years, and if they too decide to take it in another new direction, let's hope the results are similar to those that MercurySteam has so well delivered to us.

Patrick 'phayton' Maier gets picked up by the SK Gaming Pro Evolution Soccer team, and is looking forward to GamesCom this year

You may known Patrick 'phayton' Maier by his achievements alone, or you may have actually met him in real life. He is the one that helped win the German Master 2013, a pretty big victory for that team. Recently the guys over at SK Gaming have picked him up, adding him to their Pro Evolution Soccer team. Patrick is also as ready as can be for the finals in Dubai for September, but is also eager to try the new titles at the upcoming GamesCom in Cologne. If you are in the area and want to meet him, that's the place to do it if you are a fan of his works. Patrick had this to say about joining the SK Gaming team.

"I am very proud and happy to be part of SK Gaming. I hope on a good collaboration and I will try to represent SK Gaming with good achievements in the future, hopefully already at the World Finals in Dubai in September, 2013. But first I am looking forward to Gamescom 2013 in Cologne."
