The launch of Castlevania: Mirror of Fate HD edition was more of a success than its 3DS counterpart it seems

How well received is the big screen version of Castlevania: Mirror of Fate HD edition? It seems after a couple of weeks spent in the living rooms of the fans that it's getting a better acceptance than its Nintendo 3DS counterpart. Back in the beginning of the year, Dave Cox of MercurySteam had stated that he had originally created Mirror of Fate in HD anyway, so the thought of bringing it to console or even PC format was already on the table. The textures, models and so fourth were done all in high resolution, and then stepped down a bit to fit on the 3DS and run more smoothly.

How about a side by side comparison of them both? Below are four images, two on top are the Nintendo 3DS version, while the two on the bottom are the new HD versions. Obviously there is a big change in the two, but one might think that it would have been better to release them at the same time on both format. A Castlevania collection set is just as well. What do you think?

Castlevania - Mirror of Fate a not so hot flaming whip on the 3DS, so will it shine a bit brighter on a larger screen?

One of the biggest complaints I've seen from readers who are also fans of the Castlevania series, was how big a of a let down Mirror of Fate was. Many didn't like the idea of having a 3D based Castlevania on their hand held system. Sure, they were impressed by Lords of Shadow when it made its debut back in late 2010, but then again, that only raised another question about it. Now that Castlevania has forged its way into the 3D universe, and will likely stay there, should it be left to a large screen, and not hand held gaming systems? Many think so, but I myself have some reservations. I think Mirror of Fate might have gone about it all wrong.

I discussed this in another post by the way last February.

Trying to condense so much into so little, and having an HD version of it sit on the shelf for future reference? Yes, MercurySteam did have an HD version of it in mind the whole time, and perhaps it was for a good reason too. They didn't know how well it would be received in the hand held market, so they had a higher resolution version sitting on a computer the whole time. All this while having to reduced the quality of the game down to the 3DS format. So now that a higher end version is coming to the large as life world, the question is how well it will be accepted this time around. It might just be the second chance Mirror of Fate needed, or it might have never been meant to be at all. The world will decide once again.

It has been confirmed that Castlevania: Mirror of Fate will definitely be a HD release for PS3 and Xbox360, and just in time for Halloween this year

Is it just me, or does Konami like to release games like Castlevania and Silent Hill almost right at the same time Halloween takes place? Well, almost the same time, but this time it really is the same exact time, as Mirror of Fate has been confirmed as an HD release for PS3 as well as Xbox360, and will launch as such on October 31st. So for those of you who are like me, and fans of the traditional style "MetroidVania" type games, you might have been let down a bit by MOF. This is why is is being reintroduced on the big screen in high definition format, which should breathe new life into it.

Aside from being an HD release, it will also be a single download only version for both Xbox Live and Playstation Network, for those of you who only wanted that particular game and nothing else. Konami has also confirmed that Mirror of Fate will be included as an HD title with the upcoming Castlevania Collection, which will feature the first Lords of Shadow game, along with the Reverie and Resurrection packs and all available downloadable content up until now. It will also include a demo for Lords of Shadow 2, won't that be good for a night over with some friends. It's certainly time for some new game play footage, something we've all been waiting for.

As far as Mirror of Fate is concerned, Dave Cox, who heads the team at MercurySteam has also expressed an interest in doing a PC port of MOF, but has also stated that a PSVita version will not happen. This is likely due to a lack of demand for it. Such is the case for Pro Evolution Soccer. No return on your investment, no release on that system obviously.

It looks like there might be a Castlevania: Lords of Shadow collection that will be equipped with Mirror of Fate and a LOS2 demo

Right after a Metal Gear collection had just taken the scene by storm, along comes a Castlevania collection? Well, not exactly. This is more of an exclusive Lords of Shadow collection, and will not only include a demo for Lords of Shadow 2, but will also feature an HD version of Mirror of Fate! Yes indeed. Further back in time, toward the beginning of the year, February 4th to be exact, I did a post about Mirror of Fate becoming an HD title one day. Now we see that it is actually becoming a reality....MAYBE. If it does turn out to be true, that's fine by you and me, the Castlevania fans right? So what will this supposed collection have included with it? According to a retail listing at play-asia, here is what you will get with it.

  • Castlevania Lords of Shadow 1
  • Castlevania Lords of Shadow 1 DLC 1 – Reverie
  • Castlevania Lords of Shadow 1 DLC 2 – Resurrection
  • Castlevania Lords of Shadow Mirror of Fate HD
  • Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 Exclusive Demo

Now keep in mind, that the play-asia site might not even have that listing page by the time you read this, or maybe it will. Konami has not confirmed a Lords of Shadow collection in our future, so don't take this to heart just yet. However, the very prospect of having Mirror of Fate in HD run on a huge screen is something I myself wouldn't want to pass up. Here is hoping this makeshift retail page at play-asia isn't doing just that, and playing around with us.
