There's gold in those hills, and there's some past Castlevania influence in the latest Lords of Shadow 2 game. Fans are fixing to get a taste this Halloween, and the first half of November, as I take a look at some facts backing up a successful 3D Castlevania game that some thought wouldn't cut it. Dracula's Curse and Super Castlevania IV have played a particular influence in the development of the Lords of Shadow series. Part of this is due to developer Dave Cox being a fan himself of those two hit titles. Even the simple act of climbing staircases, which is a trademark of the series was also included as an element.
One thing Cox did want for LOS, was for it to somewhat "stand out" from the usual crowd of "MetroidVania" type games of the past. For those of you who might not understand that phrase, think about Symphony of the Night, and Order of Ecclesia. Those two have a Metroid influence driven into their structure of game play, even though neither have anything to do with each other of course.
So many other elements were also taken into considering for the development of LOS2, such as a virtual reality helmet? Yes, the Oculus Rift helmet was seriously considered an option on the table for Dave Cox and his team. I say go for it. For years this is what we all wanted isn't it? Virtual reality taking us into the future of gaming and putting another step closer to feeling like we are actually there. Bring it on, I can't wait.
